The system uses Valeo’s Aquablade wiper blade system to distribute defrosting fluid. The defroster system is connected to the Aquablade system in parallel with a windshield debugging (cleaner) system. An ECU controls either the windshield debugging washer pump or defroster pump as required, and the fluids are distributed to both wiper blades.

Delphi believes that 48-volt mild hybrids could offer significant CO2 reductions and driver benefits for cars in the future. Speaking at the IAA 2015 (Frankfurt Motor Show), Christian Schäfer, Global Director of Advanced Electrical and Electronic Architectures at Delphi, told Automotive Engineering that there are several drivers for the technology that were not present 15 years ago.

“The main driver is the carbon dioxide threshold of 95 g/km fleet average in 2021 across the European Union,” he said. “The idea is that we have a mild hybrid, so we don’t need high-voltage on all cars because it is too expensive to implement. We would have 48-volts, especially in the low segment, up to C-segment cars. Then we could have a belt-driven starter/alternator and can use it as an e-boost if you don’t have a rear drive unit, so the alternator is an electrical machine to boost the combustion engine.”

Delphi envisages that the car would start with electric propulsion for the first 100 m (328 ft) of movement.

Euro 6c emissions limits will present a number of challenges for light duty engine emissions, both gasoline and diesel when the regulations come into force in September 2017. One significant hurdle is speeding light-off of diesel selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts.

In current systems it can take up to 10 or 12 minutes for a diesel SCR cat to reach its light-off temperature. This is determined to an extent by the packaging of the exhaust aftertreatment system.

In a current Euro 6b system the diesel particulate filter (DPF) may be the first aftertreatment device downstream of the engine, with a separation of 50 to 60 cm (19.6 to 23.6 in) between the rear of the DPF and the front of the SCR cat. Under Euro 6c, the light-off time would have to be shortened to between three to four minutes. The same will apply to US Tier 3 regulations, which will require a light off time of two minutes or less. Reducing the distance between the SCR and DPF to around 10 cm (4 in) could help.

With the supercharged 279-kW (374-hp) 460-N·m (339-lb·ft) 4.0-L V6 engine from the F-type tucked under its hood, the XF was able to show how to convincingly link, at high speed, the words “sedan” and “sport” even with this editor (with no race driver pretensions) in control. It tackled the task with a composed and tidy aplomb.

But the new XF (previously described at http://articles.sae.org/14038/) is also available with Jaguar’s new 2.0-L four-cylinder Ingenium diesel—using Bosch 1800-bar (26.1-ksi) common-rail injection system—with power outputs from 120 to 132 kW (161 to 177 hp), the latter offered in “R-Sport” configuration.
