VW emissions scandal will impact future engine controls testing

A change in the U.S. Environmental P14384_22830rotection Agency’s testing programs won’t be the only consequence for automakers in the wake of the Volkswagen emissions-cheating scandal.

Powertrain control strategies, including the ability to adjust engines with aftermarket devices, may also be revised, experts note. They also expect government regulators in the U.S. and Europe to more strictly enforce existing rules and tighten emission-testing protocols, close gaps between laboratory and real-world testing, and perform more spot checks that can catch abuse after new vehicle models are approved for sale.

Overall, industry engineers should expect greater oversight over automotive testing and validation in the aftermath of what some are calling “TDI-gate.”

Shortly after the EPA said VW was using illegal engine-control software that reduced diesel tailpipe emissions during dynamometer calibration testing, the agency announced it would begin performing on-road tests. That quick response came as VW’s CEO resigned, investigations began, lawsuits by vehicle owners flooded in, and the company’s market value plummeted.

While VW’s deception may be the largest such event, it’s far from the first. In 1998 EPA levied

Valeo launches remote control defrosting

14366_22747Valeo estimates that the company’s new Remote Clean4U windshield defrosting and cleaning system, shown at 2015 IAA (Frankfurt Motor Show) for the first time, consumes 28 times less energy than an electric defrosting system.

The system uses Valeo’s Aquablade wiper blade system to distribute defrosting fluid. This is not sprayed onto the windshield like washer fluid, instead, the Aquablade system sprays the fluid onto the windscreen immediately ahead of the blade, then the windshield wipers clear away the frost, one section at a time with the wiper blades stopping after the segment has been cleared while more defrosting fluid is spread and the next section cleared. Valeo claims that the system clears a windshield in less than 90 s at a temperature of -20°C (-4°F).

The defroster system is connected to the Aquablade system in parallel with a windshield debugging (cleaner) system. An ECU controls either the windshield debugging washer pump or defroster pump as required, and the fluids are distributed to both wiper blades.

A smart phone app can be used to trigger either operation before the driver

Toyota chief talks trucks

14334_22639It’s been 10 years since the last all-new Toyota Tacoma, which isn’t unusual for a truck’s life cycle, according to Mike Sweers (SAE Member, 2002), Chief Engineer for the Tundra (since 2010) and Tacoma (since 2012) programs at Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, MI. Trucks require “a lot more resources to develop” because of product variability: “If we take the 2016 Tacoma, we have an Access Cab and Double Cab, we’ve got two bed lengths [60.5 and 73.7 in], two wheelbases [127.4 and 140.6 in], and from a powertrain standpoint we developed a new [3.5-L direct injection Atkinson cycle V6] engine and two new transmissions [six-speed automatic and manual], so all that stuff takes time,” he said, adding that Toyota’s emphasis on QDR (quality, durability, and reliability) also contributes to development timing.

The new V6 with VVT-iW (variable valve timing with intelligent wider intake) is equipped with Toyota’s D-4S technology, featuring both direct and port fuel injection. The engine generates 278 hp (207 kW), an increase of 42 hp (31 kW) over the previous V6, and 265 lb·ft (359

How To Change a Car Radiator

A car radiator keeps the engine from getting too hot. Proper radiator maintenance is vital to keeping your car running at peak performance and for steering clear of costly engine damage due to overheating.

Normally, the first warning that there is a problem with a car’s cooling system is either steam coming out from under the hood or the temperature gauge rising alarmingly.

Here are easy step by step guide on how to replace an automotive radiator:

Drain the radiator. Make sure the engine is cold, then take off or release the pressure cap on the radiator. Open the drain valve. Allow the coolant to drain into a bucket or drain pan, and then close the valve.

Remove the hoses from the radiator. Loosen the nose clamps and pull the hoses off of their attachment necks. Take off the auxiliary belts by sliding them off of their pulleys to get more work room.

Install the new hose. Attach and clamp one end securely in place before you tackle the other end. Make sure that the hose won’t restrict any moving parts or touch the engine when it’s hot, and that the clamps are tight.

Start the engine and add more water and coolant as the level

2016 Audi S8 Plus Review

Always thought the Audi S8(with Car DVD Player) is a bit slow and too quiet? Audi comes to your rescue with the new Audi S8 Plus! Its Audi’s ultimate performance limousine based on the A8. We had the exclusive opportunity to test the Audi S8 Plus and it didn’t let us down.

The Audi S8 Plus is based on the third generation S8 which was first introduced in 2012. The S8 has built a solid reputation since its inception in 1996 and true to the original it still combines luxury with performance. One of its signature features is Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive and after a generation equipped with a V10 engine, the latest S8 once again uses a V8 power plant

The new Audi S8 Plus comes with the same 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine under the bonnet as the ‘normal’ Audi S8. However, thanks to a raised red line, higher boost levels of both turbos and some other modifications, the V8 engine produces 605hp (between 6,100-6,800 rpm). That is a whopping 85hp more than regular S8 and only 5hp shy of Audi’s halo sportscar the R8 V10 plus.

The S8 Plus also has more torque as the regular S8: 700Nm between 1,750-6,000 rpm and 750Nm

Used Wheelchair accessible minivans going places

Mobility impaired – a daily struggle

Disability is a combination of the body and the mind. Wheelchairs and Wheelchair accessible minivans are a blessing of freedom and movement.

A disable person is all the more traumatized by his/her own low self-esteem than the physical pain. The inability to perform daily task and the constant dependence on another person for their daily needs is a humiliation that is difficult to bear. Wheelchair accessible minivans are the answer to that.

But, to make sure that a disabled person can truly enjoy the above mentioned rights, we need to provide for their basic needs. A wheelchair-bound person if reduced to the four walls is most likely to be cut off from the society and that may easily lead to depression.

Adjusting with you

We seldom overlook the colossal importance of a human being to be able to maneuver his/her way through the daily needs of life. Such needs are not restricted to the confinements of one’s home. They include going to the supermarkets or the doctor’s clinic. Being able to perform such tasks by their own ability is a force towards self-confidence.

Wheelchair accessible minivans consider the multi-faceted needs of a human being in relation to a vehicle.

Delphi says 48 volt mild hybrid systems could offer 15% CO2 reductions

Delphi believes that 48-volt mild hybrids could offer significant CO2 reductions and driver benefits for cars in the future. Speaking at the IAA 2015 (Frankfurt Motor Show), Christian Schäfer, Global Director of Advanced Electrical and Electronic Architectures at Delphi, told Automotive Engineering that there are several drivers for the technology that were not present 15 years ago.

“The main driver is the carbon dioxide threshold of 95 g/km fleet average in 2021 across the European Union,” he said. “The idea is that we have a mild hybrid, so we don’t need high-voltage on all cars because it is too expensive to implement. We would have 48-volts, especially in the low segment, up to C-segment cars. Then we could have a belt-driven starter/alternator and can use it as an e-boost if you don’t have a rear drive unit, so the alternator is an electrical machine to boost the combustion engine.”

Delphi envisages that the car would start with electric propulsion for the first 100 m (328 ft) of movement.

Regenerative braking would be the main path to reduce CO2 emissions, reckons Schäfer.

“From our experience and our discussions with European OEMs, we have seen between 7 and 10

Opel designs a new Astra

Opel launched the fourth-generation Astra at the 2015 IAA (Frankfurt Motor Show). The car is more compact than the model it replaces and weighs up to 200 kg (440 lb) less. A five-door hatchback and five-door Sports Tourer estate were on display at the show.

The Astra (a Vauxhall in the UK) will be the first vehicle to feature General MotorsOnStar Connectivity system in Europe and comes with the option of matrix LED headlights, which Opel claims is the first time this feature has been offered on a European C-segment car.

“There was a lot of really close work between our engineering, product planning, marketing, and design guys on a daily basis,” said Malcolm Ward, Opel/Vauxhall Exterior Design Director. The new car uses the Opel design language dubbed “Sculptural Artistry.”

“That is really all about very fluid sculptural shapes with some very precise technical elements,” explained Ward. “On a secondary level, we always try to give a lot of emphasis to the wheels, so we sculpture the surfaces very strongly so that the car sits better on the road. We are always trying to make our cars look as low and as wide

Understanding the Importance of electrostatic discharge standards

Within the past decade, the safety and reliability standards for automotive electronics have changed significantly as new technologies have evolved. Technologies that used to be sold as options, including stability control and antilock brakes, are now offered as standard features in most vehicles. Today’s innovative automotive electronics enable lane-departure warning, vehicle communications, and night vision.

This shift in design and manufacturing mandates that designers understand the demands of the automotive certification standard that extends beyond the protection requirements for consumer electronics. However, designing for the automotive standard involves several technology challenges.

As automotive integrated circuits continue getting smaller and faster, they become more susceptible to damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD). In addition, the automotive environment is marked by harsh electrical transients, which are simulated during automotive certification testing.

This article makes practical application of automotive standards, circuits, and solutions to help circuit designers create robust, reliable designs. First, it highlights the testing requirements of two test standards and discusses the most common types of automotive circuits requiring protection. Then, it identifies advanced circuit protection technologies for several automotive applications that should be implemented early in the design phase to ensure safety and reliability.

Johnson Controls Faurecia envision interiors for autonomous driving

As the automotive industry moves to more autonomous driving, the requirements for vehicle interiors and seating will “radically change” as well, according to Johnson Controls. The supplier foresees the driver’s seat becoming a “comfortable control unit” as additional assistance systems come on board. Company executives shared their vision of the forthcoming shift at the recent IAA (Frankfurt Motor Show) 2015.

“Autonomous driving is on its way,” said Dr. Detlef Jürss, Group Vice President and General Manager Product Group Seating Components at Johnson Controls. “In the future, the role of the person in the driver’s seat will shift from that of an ‘active driver’ to that of a ‘supervisor’ who must be able to intervene whenever necessary. The seat will become a multi-talented interior component that provides its strengths in safety, comfort, and entertainment.”

But it’s still a long way off until the vehicle takes over all control functions and the driver simply assumes the role of passenger, according to Jürss. Challenges that must first be overcome include details concerning the necessary investment-intensive infrastructure, liability and legal issues, ethical aspects (who do the safety systems protect?), technological feasibility, and safety.

“The seat will become much more of an integral part of occupant protection, which

Tenneco unveils emission control solutions for Euro 6c

Euro 6c emissions limits will present a number of challenges for light duty engine emissions, both gasoline and diesel when the regulations come into force in September 2017. One significant hurdle is speeding light-off of diesel selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts.

In current systems it can take up to 10 or 12 minutes for a diesel SCR cat to reach its light-off temperature. This is determined to an extent by the packaging of the exhaust aftertreatment system.

In a current Euro 6b system the diesel particulate filter (DPF) may be the first aftertreatment device downstream of the engine, with a separation of 50 to 60 cm (19.6 to 23.6 in) between the rear of the DPF and the front of the SCR cat. Under Euro 6c, the light-off time would have to be shortened to between three to four minutes. The same will apply to US Tier 3 regulations, which will require a light off time of two minutes or less. Reducing the distance between the SCR and DPF to around 10 cm (4 in) could help.

The problem then is that neither the DPF nor the SCR cat is close enough to the engine to ensure that both

Jaguars making of a sports sedan

“Sport” is a much abused word in the automotive industry. Like “coupe” and “GT” together with other attempts at glorification through categorization, it is open to abuse.

So when Jaguar’s senior engineering executives wanted to demonstrate to Automotive Engineering that its new, mid-size, lightened, aerodynamically efficient, premium 2016MY XF really is a “sports sedan,” they illustrated the point not only on very demanding roads in northern Spain but also on the fast Circuito de Navarra racetrack.

With the supercharged 279-kW (374-hp) 460-N·m (339-lb·ft) 4.0-L V6 engine from the F-type tucked under its hood, the XF was able to show how to convincingly link, at high speed, the words “sedan” and “sport” even with this editor (with no race driver pretensions) in control. It tackled the task with a composed and tidy aplomb.

But the new XF (previously described at http://articles.sae.org/14038/) is also available with Jaguar’s new 2.0-L four-cylinder Ingenium diesel—using Bosch 1800-bar (26.1-ksi) common-rail injection system—with power outputs from 120 to 132 kW (161 to 177 hp), the latter offered in “R-Sport” configuration.

In engineering terms could that, despite its nametag, also be termed a sports sedan? The answer, with one caveat, is in the affirmative.

“Must” list
